It being a know fact that infants and children learn by association, Karen chose to customize and incorporate the Sleep Association method into her work guiding children to sleep thru association, versus the well-known crying it out method.
Sleep Association consists of developing a highly personalized and comprehensive approach to getting babies to sleep and is based on the baby's weight-for-age and natural wake / sleep cycle, involves providing cues and signals to indicate to the baby what the parent expects (i.e.: sleep time) and incorporates the use of sleep aids such as a "lovey".
Positive Outcomes
With a 99% success rate, Karen has found her individualized method to be extremely rewarding for families. A sleep routine can be accomplished in 3-6 days but will depend upon the vulnerability of the parents and the age and resistance of the child.
"Usually I see a definite progress within 2-3 days and a routine established no longer than 2 weeks into the process." Twins for example typically take longer as does an older, mobile child. I always say "increased mobility leads to increased resistance."
As a result, a baby's positive association related to sleep and the important ability to self-sooth and put one's self to sleep is accomplished.
Parent confidence and consistency is paramount and without it - sleep association is practically impossible. By maintaining a constant routine with regular cues, parents and caregivers will promote the best outcome for their baby's sleep patterns.
